Acorn and Undesirable Fruit Elimination:
Acorn and fruit production varies from year to year-sometimes you'll get a bumper crop and other times just a few. There isn't a simple way to prevent the acorns and fruit from forming.
Ethephon growth regulator can be sprayed on the trees when they bloom to prevent acorn and fruit formation. But timing of the application can be tricky for the average homeowner to detect. Timing of the application is critical, and even if you get the timing right, the spray must cover the entire tree. The application of ethephon must be made prior to fruit set and should be applied when your oaks or fruit trees are in mid- to full bloom. Applications made too early or too late will not be effective.
The spray is effective for only one year, so it would have to be reapplied annually.
Oak flowers/tassels are not easily identified like those of fruit trees. Oak tassels grow to about .50 inches and are narrow, dangling bodies that hang from the terminal end of branches. Fruit trees usually put out a pretty colorful blossom that most people admire.
Because every tree puts tassels/blooms on at different times, FireBug Pest Control relies heavily on the owner to make the decision of when to spray. Additionally, FireBug Pest Control does not guarantee that application will work.
Questions & Answers
Q- Who much does it cost to treat my tree?
A- The minimum cost $115.00 and the biggest tree cost $175.00
Q- What is Ethephon?
A- It is contact growth regulator (hormone). It is widely used in agriculture as a ripening agent.
Q-How does It work?
A-Ethephon breaks down into ethylene, a naturally occurring compound, in the plant. When a plant is under stress it produces ethylene. If the plant is in bloom at the time of excess ethylene production, the first symptom is blossom abortion. This is how ethephon works, it causes the plant to abort its blossoms.

Q-When should I use ethephon?
A-The best time for application on any flowering plant is the mid to full bloom stage.
Q-If the tree is stressed for any reason can I treat it anyway?
A-No. If the tree is already under stress ethephon may increase stress on the tree.

If the tassels have turned brown, as in the picture,
it is too late to effectively treat.
